The neckline is the most overlooked detail in a men’s haircut — and the most telling.
You can have a perfect fade, a sharp part, and a clean top — but if the neckline isn’t right, the whole cut falls apart. At Matter of Instinct on the Lower East Side, it’s one of the first things our barbers discuss during every consultation.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is a Neckline?
The neckline is where your hair ends and your neck begins. It’s the finish line of any haircut — the detail that determines whether your cut looks intentional or unfinished.
There are three main types of men’s necklines, each with a different effect on your overall look.
The Squared Neckline (Blocked)
A squared neckline, also called a blocked neckline, creates a straight horizontal line across the back of the neck.
This is the classic barbershop finish. It’s clean, defined, and reads as intentional. A squared neckline works especially well for men with thinner necks because the hard line creates the illusion of width. It’s also the style that holds up longest between cuts — the defined edge stays sharp as the hair grows.
Best for: Classic cuts, business professionals, men who want a clean and structured look.
Maintenance: Grows out visibly — you’ll see the line soften after 2–3 weeks.
The Rounded Neckline
A rounded neckline follows the natural curve of your hairline, tapering gently around the corners rather than cutting a straight line.
It’s a softer, more relaxed finish. While it was historically associated with women’s cuts, it’s become a popular choice for men who want a more natural-looking result that grows out gracefully. If your natural hairline has a curve to it, a rounded neckline works with it rather than against it.
Best for: Natural and textured styles, men with wider necks, clients who go longer between cuts.
Maintenance: Grows out more naturally — the transition is subtle.
The Tapered Neckline
The tapered neckline is a gradual fade from the hair down to the skin. There’s no defined line — just a smooth graduation that gets shorter and shorter until it disappears.
This is the most modern and the most versatile of the three. It works on virtually every face shape and neck type, and it complements skin fades, scissor cuts, and everything in between. At MOI, the tapered neckline is one of our most requested finishes.
Best for: Fades, modern cuts, men who want a clean but low-maintenance finish.
Maintenance: The softest grow-out of the three — stays clean-looking the longest.
How to Choose the Right Neckline
The right neckline depends on three things: your neck shape, your head shape, and the overall style of your haircut.
As a general rule:
- Wide neck → rounded or tapered softens the appearance
- Thin neck → squared adds definition and structure
- Strong jawline → rounded or tapered creates balance
- Classic cut → squared is almost always the right call
- Skin fade → tapered is the natural extension of the cut
The best way to figure it out is to talk to your barber. At Matter of Instinct, every haircut starts with a full consultation — we look at your head shape, your natural hairline, and how you wear your hair before we pick up any tools.
The Neckline and Your Natural Hairline
One thing most people don’t know: your natural hairline has a huge impact on which neckline works best.
Some men have a straight natural hairline across the back of the neck — squared and blocked cuts work perfectly here. Others have a V-shaped or rounded natural hairline — forcing a squared finish on that shape requires removing more hair and can look unnatural.
A skilled barber reads your natural hairline first and recommends accordingly.
How Often Should You Get Your Neckline Cleaned Up?
If you’re going with a squared or blocked neckline, plan on coming in every 2–3 weeks for a cleanup. The defined line makes grow-out obvious.
A tapered or rounded neckline can go 3–4 weeks comfortably before it starts to look overgrown.
For clients on a regular schedule at Matter of Instinct, we offer back and sides appointments specifically for neckline maintenance between full cuts.
Beyond the Neckline
The neckline is one piece of the puzzle. At Matter of Instinct we approach every appointment the same way — with attention to every detail of the cut from start to finish.
If you’re looking to elevate your grooming routine, our straight razor shave is one of the closest and most comfortable shaves you’ll find in New York. Pair it with a beard trim and a scissor cut and you’ll leave the shop looking like a completely different person.
